After Hassan Fathy and Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish Egyptian Mozn Hassan receives Alternative Nobel Prize

The Egyptian feminist Mozn Hassan and her organization “Nazra for Feminist Studies” receive the 2016 Right Livelihood Award, also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”. After the Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy and SEKEM Founder Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish, Mozn Hassan is the third Egyptian honoured by this meaningful award.

The Award was given to Hassan “for asserting the equality and rights of women in circumstances where they are subject to ongoing violence, abuse and discrimination,” the Right Livelihood Award Foundation stated. Besides Hassan, the Syrian organization White Helmet, the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet, and the Russian human rights activist Swetlana Gannuschkina will be honoured with this year’s Alternative Nobel Prize.

Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish and SEKEM received the Right Livelihood Award in 2003 as a „Business Model for the 21th Century” and for its “economy of love”.

SEKEM congratulates Mozn Hassan and is especially happy about the recognition of her commitment to gender equality and women’s rights. Last year SEKEM published a Gender Strategy for a Balanced Society in order to give the activities that are done in all SEKEM institutions for strengthening women an official scope.
