Making it Explicit: Embedding the SDGs Into the Core Business

Bringing key business players together at one table – in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Egypt, the Egyptian Corporate Responsibility Center as well as the Industrial Modernisation Center hosted the roundtable discussion “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Private Sector” in Cairo in this week. Different representatives of the Egyptian private business community and SEKEM Public Relations Specialist, Noha Hussein, discussed aligning the present and the future business activities with the SDGs.

SEKEM has been integrating the SDGs into the core of its business strategy since 1977, even though it was named differently,” said SEKEM representative Noha Hussein during the panel discussion. The Public Relations Specialist introduced SEKEMs holistic approach to the other representatives, which has been fostering ethical and sustainable business activities for 40 years. “This would not be possible without a huge network of partners, investors and like-minded people from all over the world,” she stated, referring to the contribution of SEKEMs network to the common goals of a healthy and sustainable future.

Together we can promote prosperity

An awareness session initiated the event introducing the 17 SDGs and highlighted the necessity of building cooperation between all the concerned parties: Governments cannot achieve the SDGs alone. Private sector’s innovation, creativity, technological expertise and investment will be essential for success.

The interactive panel can be seen as a beforehand step leading to a promising cooperation between the various private sector enterprises. Hence, the committed enterprises will denote Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy for 2030 in the upcoming meeting of the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) 2017. Titled “Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world”, it will be held in New York. The HLPF is a United Nations central platform for following-up on and reviewing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.
