Heliopolis University Operates on 100% Renewable Energies

Paving the way for a green future, this November, Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development (HU) became the first university in Egypt that operates on 100% renewable energy. The preparation for this step took nearly 4 months of hard work and dedication.

The project, which is currently in the observation phase, consists of two solar stations powering the university; one in the Faculty of Pharmacy and the other in the headquarters building, covering 124 kilowatts.

Several SEKEM institutions supported the project: Eco-energy and Heliopolis University Carbon Footprint Center were mainly in charge of the implementation. Some undergraduates and graduates of Heliopolis University were working under the management of Eco-energy as well and students of the SEKEM Vocational Training Center built and installed the solar panels that generate clean electricity.

The roofs of all faculties of Heliopolis University are covered with solar panels.

The goal was to turn HU into a university with a green campus, decrease carbon dioxide emissions and achieve self-sufficiency. SEKEM aims to operate all its institutions only by renewable energies until 2027. HU is now the first SEKEM institution that achieved this goal.

“We are very proud that we managed to take this important step”, said professor Ramy who works in the Faculty of Engineering. “Now we are looking forward to supporting other institutions in Egypt with consultation and designing their transition to 100% renewable energies.”
